To help support Quad City businesses and residents affected by this year’s Mississippi River flood, Whitey’s Ice Cream is donating 100% of proceeds from the sale of Mississippi Mud Ice Cream to relief efforts. We are thrilled to announce that the donation total came to $45,000.
Starting on Wednesday, May 1 and running through Friday, May 17, Quad Citizens rushed to our stores to help support flood relief efforts by purchasing a cone, shake, 1.75 qt. container, or three-gallon can of Mississippi Mud Ice Cream. $40,000 of the money raised will be donated to the American Red Cross and $5,000 will be donated to the Salvation Army for flood relief efforts in the Quad Cities.
Mississippi Mud Ice Cream was originally created with the American Red Cross to benefit those affected by the Great Flood of 1993. It is a KONA® coffee flavored ice cream combined with fudge swirls and mixed with OREO® cookie bits.
“It is absolutely extraordinary to see how much the community came out to support this cause,” said Jon Tunberg, co-owner of Whitey’s Ice Cream. “From the second this donation campaign was announced our stores were inundated with customers coming in for Mississippi Mud Ice Cream. Everyone was looking for a way to help and this was a sweet way to contribute.”
Jeff Tunberg, co-owner of Whitey’s Ice Cream stated that “since this was a last-minute push, we weren’t fully prepared with enough back-stock to accommodate for the sudden rush of Mississippi Mud orders, so we had to rush order a heavy supply of our KONA® flavoring. The community really came out in support and we are so thankful to be part of the Quad Cities.”
Whitey’s would like to thank all customers near and far that came into our stores, ordered online or purchased at the grocery store over the past couple weeks. Without this support, the donation would not have been possible. Also, a huge thanks to our wonderful employees who made and scooped a lot of Mississippi Mud Ice Cream over the past couple weeks.
